Boundary Canyon (Near Zions National Park) - Hiking Trail Directions and Notes (Posted By: DerekHolmes)

Avg Rating: Not Available
Avg Time: Not Available
Total Distance: 5.6 miles
Terrain: Insane
Info: This is a great canyon with gorgeous back to back rappels. Its also very full of life which isn't typical for a zions slot canyon. We saw an eagle, mice, snakes, a turkey, lots of fish, birds, etc. Even ate a few wild raspberries. The fact that you dont need a permit is a bonus too. The longest rappel is about 175 feet.

Now on to the negatives. You have to hike back up this and the hike up is more technical and almost seems more steep than the rappels down. Yes I'm exaggerating but not by much. Do not attempt this hike unless you feel confident you can run a 5k and have good scrambling / climbing skill. The exit is called Missing In action, its brutally, steep, sketchy, but at least its very well marked and defined.

Keep in mind that if the water level is high you will need a wetsuit and this canyon transforms into a much harder canyon. You will want to call and find the water flow rate before attempting.

10 Waypoints

1: Northern trailhead for the West Rim Trail
N 37º 22.8954   W 113º 1.3824
Distance from Home: 948.2 miles

Notes: Trail head isnt very far at all from kolob lake. There is a general store nearby and also the entrance to west rim trail head.

2: Left on Logging Road
N 37º 23.1438   W 113º 0.6672
Distance: 0.7 miles

Notes: You hike down and follow and old mining road that all but disappears at times. We did this but it seemed like if you follow the road it would make for a much longer but easier entrance. (There is a very defined road right at the start of the rappelling)

3: Boundary Canyon
N 37º 23.5104   W 113º 0.0378
Distance: 0.7 miles

Notes: I'd recommend taking a GPS device if its your first time. With it we had no problems finding the start of the canyon.

4: Exit Canyon
N 37º 23.6730   W 112º 59.3730
Distance: 0.6 miles

Notes: Exit of Boundary Canyon where it meets Kolob Creek.

5: MIA Exit
N 37º 22.7898   W 112º 58.9314
Distance: 1.1 miles

Notes: MIA Exit leaves Kolob Creek. This is pretty easy to find, but hard to believe you have to climb out of it. Its basically the first opening at all on your right as you hike through the canyon. There are multiple cairns and other markers that will at least give you piece of mind that yes other people have hiked up this before and lived.

6: The Saddle
N 37º 22.7856   W 112º 59.1372
Distance: 0.2 miles

Notes: Half way there??

7: MIA Top
N 37º 23.0688   W 112º 59.5908
Distance: 0.5 miles

Notes: Congratulations, you made it up some extremely steep terrain and on to the road. Sorry bud, but you still have an hour of hiking up the road.

8: Circle Back to The Start
N 37º 23.0906   W 113º 0.2075
Distance: 0.6 miles

Notes: The road will switch back quite a bit as you make your way back up the mountain.

9: Looking Familiar
N 37º 23.1438   W 113º 0.6672
Distance: 0.4 miles

10: Made the Round Trip
N 37º 22.8954   W 113º 1.3824
Distance: 0.7 miles
